A Day in the Life of an Agave (Who Dreams big!)

October 15, 2025

2 minutes read
An agave named "Alex" who wants to become IBÁ Mezcal

By: Alex — a humble agave with amazing potential. (Or so my parents say.)

I don’t have a calendar. Or a clock. Or, you know, arms.
But I’ve been told today is a new day, another step in my agave to mezcal journey.
So I do what I always do:
Soak. Chill. Absorb. Repeat.

Sun’s good today. Earth’s warm. My roots are vibing.
A beetle passed by earlier. No drama. Gave him a nod.

They say patience is the name of the game.
And I’m playing the long one.
No rush. I’ve got years. Many of them. Seriously.

I’ve heard things. Stories, really.
About what happens to agaves who make it.
Who really make it. The elders speak softly about it behind the shadows.

They say if you’re lucky… if you grow just right,
with the perfect balance of sun, soil, and soul…
you get chosen.

Carried away by mezcaleros with strong hands and kind eyes.
Kissed by smoke.
Massaged to perfection under a heavy stone wheel.
Distilled into something people whisper about at dinner.
Clink glasses over. Tattoo on their memory.

My parents told me:
“You’ve got what it takes, kid. You could become… IBÁ Mezcal.”

No pressure.

I know I’m not ready.
Still got some growing to do.
But when my time comes?

I want to be complex.
I want to be layered.
I want to be smooth AF.

I want to be the kind of mezcal that makes people pause mid-sip and say,
“Wait. What is this?”
(But in a good way.)

Not every agave makes it. But I’ve got dreams. Big ones.
This agave to mezcal journey might actually take me somewhere —
to the heart of a bottle with my name on it (well, sort of).

For now, I’ll stay grounded.
Drink up the morning light.
And keep dreaming big.

Because one day,
if the stars align and the gods of the palenque (another word for a mezcal distillery!) smile down on me…

I’ll be poured into a bottle of IBÁ.
My brethren will talk about me in the fields for years.
One for the history books.

I’ll finally know what celebration tastes like.
And, boy will my parents be proud!

(Here’s how mezcal is made, if you’re curious.)
