The Glass Matters. More Than You Think.

Let’s start here.

You can drink mezcal out of whatever you want. A coffee mug. A plastic cup. A chipped souvenir shot glass from Cancun circa 2009.

We won’t judge you. Much.

But if you really want to understand mezcal, the glass you choose changes the experience. Not in a snobby, pinky-up way. In a practical, sensory, “oh wow I didn’t know it could taste like that” way.

Because mezcal isn’t just alcohol. It’s aroma. It’s texture. It’s temperature. It’s layers.

And the right glass lets mezcal reveal itself the way it’s supposed to.

THE COPITA: THE OG

Small. Shallow. Usually clay. Sometimes glass.

The copita is mezcal’s original stage.

It doesn’t trap aroma the way a wine glass does. Instead, it lets the spirit open up naturally. You sip from a wide rim, which spreads the liquid across your palate instead of shooting it straight to the back of your throat.

Translation: more flavor. More expression.

Clay copitas can even add a subtle earthy note. Not because they’re magical. Because they’re porous. They breathe with the spirit.

It’s simple. Honest. A little rustic. Very Oaxaca.

THE VELADORA: LOW KEY GENIUS

Ever seen mezcal poured into what looks like a small votive candle glass? That’s a veladora.

It’s humble. It’s practical. It’s everywhere in Oaxaca.

The straight sides concentrate aroma just enough. The thick base keeps the temperature steady. And the weight in your hand slows you down, even if you don’t mean to.

It feels grounded. Which is fitting, considering mezcal starts in the ground.

THE GLENCAIRN: THE REBEL GUEST

Yes, the whisky glass.

Purists might roll their eyes. We don’t.

A Glencairn narrows at the top, which concentrates aroma beautifully. If you want to dissect notes like roasted agave, smoke, citrus peel, and minerality, it does the job beautifully.

Just don’t overthink it. Mezcal doesn’t need a lab coat.

THE SHOT GLASS: PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Can you drink mezcal from a shot glass?

Of course.

Should you slam it?

No.

Mezcal is not a race. It is not a dare. It is not a punishment for losing a bet.

If you use a shot glass, sip it. Let it roll. Give it a second. Appreciate the pour. Three to five seconds to breathe is plenty. Then let it hit your palate gently before you take a real sip.

You can be wild. Just be intentional.

SO WHAT’S BEST?

The best glass is the one that makes you slow down.

The one that makes you notice the aroma before the sip.
The texture before the swallow.
The layers before the next pour.

For IBÁ, we love a copita or veladora. They let the complexity show up without turning the moment into a tasting seminar.

Because at the end of the day, drinkware is not about rules.

It’s about respect.

Respect for the agave that took years to grow.
Respect for the hands that crafted it.
Respect for your own experience.

Pour it. Hold it. Smell it. Sip it.

However you do it, don’t rush the good part.
